Kitchen Remodeling Design Advice For 2010

Whenever I am eating lunch at the Spectrum, I overhear stock brokers always getting asked for hot stock tips. My computer guys are forever being bombarded by people with questions about how to make their PC work faster and folks who run into landscapers want to know what is the best tip for keeping grass the greenest in the neighborhood. For me, as a home remodeler, the number one question that people consistently ask me is,  What is the key to remodeling a kitchen if you are on a super tight budget?”.

The Kitchen as a Symphony
The answer I am likely to give is that your kitchen is like the Orange County Symphony over on Lincoln Avenue.  Each instrument is important, from the flute to the French horn, and if even one of those notes is off-key then the entire performance just doesn’t sound quite right. And who wants to suffer through a show like that? The same way that no one wants to see a kitchen with a high end cherry cabinets next to dated vinyl flooring. The saying, “If you can’t do it right then don’t do it at all” really hits the nail on the head when it comes to kitchen remodeling. This is especially true if you are remodeling your place with plans to sell the property in the next several years. Thanks to countless cable shows that show home improvements, home buyers nowadays are smart enough to notice when a remodeling job cuts serious corners. You will never get a second chance to make a first impression, so if you lose buyers thanks to cheap appliances, faded wallpaper or poorly installed crown molding you won’t be given another chance to impress them.

My short answer to someone wanting to know how to do an inexpensive kitchen remodel is simply this: “Don’t”. It will be much better in the long run if you just wait until you have enough money to do a decent job. More importantly, if you choose low cost fixes now you will end up having to spend much more time and money in the future to make it a livable, functional and inviting kitchen.  Trust me, your newly remodeled kitchen will definitely be worth the wait.
