6 Common Kitchen Remodel Mistakes

Contemporary kitchen living roomKitchen remodels are exciting, but can be overwhelming when you’re trying to decide how you want to design it. There are so many factors, like cabinet space, pantry location, island or not? And most importantly, will all your new appliances fit? There are a handful of common mistakes people make when they start to design their new kitchen.

  1. Layout: Your layout needs to be big enough to maneuver around the kitchen without feeling cramped. If you don’t have room for an island, don’t put one in just because it looks nice. Your comfort should be priority.
  2. Storage space: There’s right and a wrong way to go about planning your storage space, and the most common mistakes are having too much or not enough storage space. Too much and you’re wasting space that could be used for something else. Not enough, and where do you put your pots and pans?
  3. Lighting: Lighting is important in a kitchen. How else will you be able to see if your food is cooked to your liking? Make sure you plan for enough lighting in your kitchen
  4. Garbage: A good place for garbage is imperative in a kitchen. Make sure you have a place that can contain smell as well as hide the garbage away so it isn’t an eyesore.
  5. Changing the design: Don’t change your design once you’ve broken ground. It’s going to be too hard to work your new design into the old one, and you’ll end up spending too much money to fix it. Once you have a plan, stick to it.
  6. Professionals: Professionals are your best friends when it comes to remodeling your home. DIY seems great in theory, but not in reality. It’s much cheaper to hire a professional who will get it done the first time rather than to do it yourself and accidentally do it wrong.
